On November 30, 2016, an event for international students to experience Japanese culture was held in the Noh theatre located in the rehearsal hall building on Ueno Campus, where Prof. Tomotaka Sekine of Japanese traditional music delivered a lecture on “Nogaku” (a form of traditional Japanese theatrical art that includes Noh and Kyogen), using some scenes of an actual Noh play. The lecture provided the opportunity for the participating international students to learn firsthand about the basic posture for a Noh actor, the effective use of “ma” (pause), and the movement of steps while maintaining a stable upper body, as well as space expressions using a fan. Through all these, the participants experienced a unique world of Nogaku.

The lecture started off with a performance by Prof. Sekine, who is a Kanze school Noh actor himself. Following his demonstration of the basic posture and use of a fan, the participants practiced Noh performance with him for one hour and a half. After that, they all went up on stage to perform some scenes together.

The event concluded with an introduction to Noh costumes that are actually used in a play, which included a presentation of how to get dressed as a Noh actor. Although they only had a short amount of time, the participants took advantage of this rare opportunity to deepen their understanding of Japan.
