International symposium: Dilettantism in modern German art

July 17, 2018

An international symposium on dilettantism in modern German art was held from October 27 to 28, 2017, inviting Professor Thorsten Valk of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, who is an internationally acclaimed researcher of Goethe, and Dr. Cordula Bishoff, a leading researcher of female dilettante from the Kupferstich-Kabinett, Dresden.

Dilettantes, or people who love art and aim to practice art for art’s sake, have served as philosophical source of modern art. However, artwork by such non-professionals has long received little attention, and their art practice has never studied comprehensively. This symposium considers that activities of dilettantes have played a major role in the emergence of modern artists, and ultimately, they serve as the original role model for artists of our time to follow. At this symposium, a comprehensive discussion took place on art practice by dilettantes. The participants reflected on the origin of art, while facing the importance of art education, at the present time when the concept of art is being questioned.

The two day event successfully ended, receiving 95 people at the auditorium of the National Museum of Western Art on the first day, and 102 people at the No.6 Hall of the Faculty of Music on the second day.
A group of researcher with multidisciplinary interests took this symposium as the occasion for publishing the outcomes of their research that was conducted under the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKEN) scheme over the past three years. Seven researchers from the group represented by Associate Professor Naoki Mori of the Faculty of Fine Arts made presentations that covered various fields including art history, music, literature, and pedagogy. Among them were two professors from Tokyo Geidai, Professor Kin’ya Osumi of musicology and Associate Professor Kayoko Komatsu of art education. The presentations attracted attention from the audience with different academic interests. Furthermore, many student attendants found dilettantism interesting as a new research theme. The discussion developed from historical examination of activities by dilettantes to their potential roles in art education in the future.

A new vision about dilettantes and their activities were thus obtained at this symposium; dilettantes, whose role is to generate new forms of art out from their diverse art practice, unlike those who practice as experts in specific fields, is an ideal model for artists of the present time to follow. The report on this symposium will be prepared in two languages and made available to global readers, intending to add a fresh dimension to research and education of art in the future.
