Achievements

During my three-week stay in Paris, I did research on ballet scripts and reviews in newspapers at the Bibliothèque nationale de France located in Paris to write my thesis on the scripts for the Romantic Ballet in France.

I obtained a permit to enter the National Library as a graduate student studying Romantic Ballet, and used the Bibliothèque-musée de l’Opéra (Opéra Library) mainly and two other libraries Quai François-Mauriac and Richelieu-Louvois.

I was able to find scripts for 80 ballet programs from the period 1815 – 1880, covering the Romantic Ballet’s golden age 1830s – 1840s, which would be the most significant material for my thesis. Not everything was viewable online, so sometimes I made printed copies of microfilm, or took pictures if the library only had an original copy. Having these materials that cover 65 years of the Romantic era, I am now able to examine the role that the Romantic Ballet played and the function it served with a wider perspective. By visiting the national library in Paris in person, I got an access to the original scripts for many ballet programs, and it was such a valuable experience.

In addition to scripts, I was also able to find newspaper reviews on ballet performances in that time period. They can be important sources of information for understanding situations in the 19th century — choreographies that can rarely be seen today, how a performance was received by the audience, etc. I also had an opportunity to attend a ballet performance at the Paris Opera, through which I was exposed to the ballet culture that still flourishes today.
