オランダ芸術科学保存協会（NICAS）との協定締結および関係機関訪問Tokyo University of the Arts concluded a partnership agreement with NICAS

2016年1月30日～ 2月5日にかけて、宮廻正明教授（社会連携担当学長特命・社会連携センター長・保存修復日本画研究室教授）を筆頭とした東京藝術大学の教職員７名がオランダへ渡航し、オランダ芸術科学保存協会 (NICAS；Netherlands Institute for Conservation Art and Science)※１との包括的な協力関係を定めた協定を結ぶとともに、関係文化機関を視察しました。
伝統技法と最先端技術の双方を活用し、美術作品等文化財の保存・修復について研究を続ける両者が協定を締結したことで、当該分野に関するより高度な研究の進展や連携企画の実現が期待されます。
※１NICAS：2015年9月25日に文化財保全の促進を目的に設立された、自然科学と美術史学、保存および修復とを統合する研究センター。従来の研究に、化学・物理学の専門知識および情報通信技術(ICT)等、最新の科学技術の新たな可能性を結びつけた学際的なアプローチを行う。オランダ科学研究機構(NWO)、アムステルダム国立美術館、アムステルダム大学(UvA)、オランダ文化遺産局(RCE)およびデルフト工科大学(TU Delft)の協力のもとに成り立っている。
一行はまず、アムステルダムのゴッホ美術館、アムステルダム国立美術館で所蔵作品を鑑賞した後、両機関内の文化財保存修復現場を視察し、関係者と意見交換を行いました。

アムステルダム国立美術館視察後には、2015年11月に来日されたNICASメンバーのロバート・ファン・ラング会長、ルイ・フェルテハール博士、ヨリス・ディック博士との再会を果たしました。
宮廻教授が、残念ながら今回は同行できなかった宮田亮平学長からのお手紙をロバート・ファン・ラング会長に手渡し、協定締結の喜びを伝えた後、調印が行われました。

翌日には、本協定に基づく第一弾のプロジェクトとして期待されている、美術作品の複製企画について、NICAS科学ワーキンググループのメンバーであるデルフト工科大学、ヨリス・ディック博士を訪問し、協議を行いました。
絵画は物理的な接触の他、日光や空気と触れるだけでも退色が進み、用いられた画材の種類によって退色の過程も異なります。現在我々が美術館で目にしている名画の多くは、描かれた当時にはより鮮やかな色合いを見せていたと言われています。
デルフト工科大学が有する最新技術を駆使することで判明する、描画に使用された画材の科学的な分析結果と、東京藝術大学の特許を用いた画期的な複製技術を組み合わせることで、まるで画家本人が描き上げたばかりのような、オリジナルに近い複製絵画制作の実現が期待されています。
文化財を国の貴重な観光・教育資源であると認識している両機関は、これまで贋作・偽物として捉えられることもあった複製絵画を、より社会に貢献するためのツールとして用いることを目指しています。

その後はハーグのマウリッツハイス美術館へ会場を移し、同美術館のエミリー・ゴーデンカー館長の他、オランダ経済省、教育・文化・科学省と会談し、両国における文化財の考え方について意見を交わしました。2015年11月に来日されたオランダ王国のマルク・ルッテ首相同席のもとに開始された本連携に対する、オランダ政府からの期待の高さが伺えます。

最終日にはロッテルダムのボイマンス美術館、ヘルダーラント州エーデのクレラー・ミューラー美術館を訪れ、今後のプロジェクトに関連する作品の視察、関係者との協議を精力的に行い、一行は多くの成果とともに帰国の途につきました。今後は訪問した各文化施設が所有する絵画作品を対象とした、複数のプロジェクトが立ち上げられる予定です。
近い将来、ゴッホ、レンブラント、フェルメールらフランドルの巨匠による作品の、本物と見紛うような複製を用いた革新的な企画や展覧会が、日本でも見られるかもしれません。

In response to last November’s visit by Dutch Prime Minister Marc Rutte and the officials from the Netherlands Institute for Conservation Art and Science (NICAS), a delegation of Tokyo University of the Arts headed by Professor Masaaki Miyasako traveled to the Netherlands and concluded a formal partnership agreement with NICAS in early February.
*1 The Netherlands Institute for Conservation Art and Science (NICAS) is a research center which was established on September 25, 2015 to bring together art history, conservation and restoration with the natural sciences, with the aim of improving the preservation of cultural heritage. This interdisciplinary approach taken by NICAS connects existing research with chemistry and physics expertise, as well as with ICT and other new possibilities enabled by cutting-edge technologies. The center works in cooperation with the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the Rijksmuseum (RM), the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft).

During the visit, the delegation members had the opportunity to tour museums and institutions involved in art conservation, such as the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Delft University of Technology, the Mauritshuis in the Hague, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, where active discussions were held to explore the possibility of collaboration between NICAS and Tokyo University of the Arts in reproducing some of the Netherlands’ greatest paintings.

Both NICAS and our university understand that cultural heritage is an important source of tourism and education, and the two institutions share the goal of utilizing reproduction of art as a means to contribute to the society. It is expected that a higher level of replication will be achieved by incorporating scientific data obtained from painting analyses by Delft University of Technology along with our university’s innovative patent technology and artists with excellent painting skills and artistic sensibilities.

Going forward, we will work closely with NICAS in carrying out various projects, with a view to promoting conservation of cultural heritage through the fusion of art and science.
