I’m Ale Grilli, a student of the New Media Master’s program taught at the Yokohama side of Tokyo Geidai. I come from the capital of Chile, Santiago, and I’m studying here for two years.

Why did you choose Geidai as your study abroad destination?

At the point when I decided to study a Master’s degree in Japan I didn’t know about Tokyo Geidai. I actually applied to other places, other programs that were offered in English, but failed to secure financing, so I gave up. I ended up studying six months at a language school in Nagano before I decided I would try again. I was now more confident in my Japanese, so I researched regular Japanese-taught programs. My desire was to find a place that would help me put together my academic background in design with my self-taught programming abilities. I found and investigated the New Media program thoroughly and found it was incredibly varied and open, a suitable space for my eclectic interests.

What did you do to prepare yourself for studying abroad in Japan?

It was a long process that, while not at that time directed at coming here to study, started with my going to Japanese classes back in Chile from 2007, then for six months in Japan. For several years I had many attempts at finding funding, while I researched universities and their programs. I grew ever closer and informed of the culture by way of constant study (I watched countless TV series, listened to much Japanese music, and so on.) It was however a largely organic process directed by my own anthropological curiosity.

What do you study at Geidai?

I’m in the New Media program. What we study is just that, “new media”—that is, the use of new channels for expressive output. My classmates’ work ranges from video works to art installations to dance to animation to education. What I’ve been doing has been mostly focused on programming language design, though lately I’ve shifted my focus to human languages and their relation to psychology and society, and creating video and other work with that theme.

What do you like about Geidai?

I can’t speak about the university as a whole, because us at the Yokohama side are physically separated from the main Ueno campus and the others, and I’ve had few chances to visit them. However, in the Film and New Media school, and more specifically in the New Media program, I’ve found an outstanding place to explore and experiment. I’ve had the pleasure to, for instance, try my hand at programming a drone. I’ve been compelled to create works I probably would not have otherwise, like radio plays and video performances. It’s been a great place to flex muscles I didn’t even know I had (even in the literal, physiological sense,) and have fun experimenting and discovering connections in varied sources. The professors are all very strict and sometimes temperamental, but they’re also very passionate and provocative. These things I all like.

What are the things that impressed you or surprised you in Japan?

I’ve been asked this question by many people back in my home country, and by Japanese people here in Japan. I never know what to answer, because by the time I first came to Japan (2013) I was already through a process of immersion in the Japanese culture, as part of my study of the language. There was little that was shockingly novel, just small things. For instance, I was fascinated by the fact that eating out could be pretty affordable if not outright cheap, and with the wide offer of cuisines that cover not only the range of Japanese dishes but also others from extremely diverse origins, even in the smaller cities and towns.

What are your future goals?

What I can say is that I don’t want to become the best at one single thing. I have very diverse interests, and I want to explore them as fully as I can. I want to do many different things, be a nomad in my career. One constant is just that I love creating, and I want to continue creating things that educate, things hitherto unseen, things that are useful, things that work beautifully, things that make people think.

Please write a message for students wishing to study in Japan.

Hi there future student-in-Japan. Everything about your stay here will no doubt provide ample opportunities for self-growth, way beyond just the school curriculum. You’ll make friends, fail at your goals, marvel at the little things, get your heart broken, find new things to like, get out of your comfort zone. As I did. It’s just life, but it’s also a life that you would not have were you not around.
