On August 1, 2017, Tokyo University of the Arts (TUA) welcomed a group of Taiwanese visitors. Minister of Culture Cheng Li-Chiun (鄭麗君), Director of the National Taiwan Museum Hung Shih-Yu (洪世佑), and Director of the Taiwan Cultural Center and Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan Chu Wen-Ching (朱文清) were warmly received by Toyomi Hoshina (Trustee and Professor) and Satoru Kitago (Professor and Assistant to the President) on behalf of President Kazuki Sawa and Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts Katsuhiko Hibino, who were both absent overseas.
Professor Hoshina greeted the guests saying that this year marks the 5th anniversary since the launch of a series of collaborative projects, where TUA and the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan enjoyed friendly relationship particularly in fine art and music. He added that TUA was willing to further deepen the friendship with Taiwan by mutually publishing the results of such collaborative cultural undertakings. Minister Cheng responded that the ministry would develop the horizontal network of Taiwanese art institutions while accelerating collaboration with TUA, thereby providing support to the development of art and culture. They agreed on the continuation of their friendship and academic exchange.
Furthermore, Minister Cheng showed a vision for the coming few years: The ministry would aim to restructure the history of Taiwanese art by collecting important Taiwanese art pieces at national museums, thorough which the history of Taiwanese art would be aligned and the relationship with world art history would also be clarified. The results would be published at symposiums.
She went on to say that the city of Taipei, which hosts many museums and other cultural facilities just like Ueno, would like to implement a cultural initiative similar to the Ueno Cultural Park scheme in the future. Professor Hoshina explained that Ueno was always a center of culture and Professor Kitago introduced some specific examples of local events such as Tokyo Suki Festival, which seemed greatly inspired Ms. Cheng.
At the end of the meeting, they mutually confirmed that artistic and cultural programs should involve the local communities and people and agreed that they would accelerate collaboration between TUA and Taiwan.
