From May 20 to 27, 2018, members of the Graduate School of Global Art at Tokyo University of the Arts (Tokyo Geidai), including Fumihiko Sumitomo (Associate Professor), Wataru Shoji (Research Assistant) and five students visited Laos to hold an exchange program with the National Institute of Fine Arts, Laos (NIFA).

In this program, the members from Tokyo Geidai worked together with Mr. Souliya Phoumivong and his students of NIFA and interviewed seven local artists living in Laos. This collaboration program aimed at making an animation work focusing on the way of living of one of the artists in Laos out of these interviews.

On the first day of the visit, a special lecture by Prof. Sumitomo from Tokyo Geidai and Ms. Misouda Heuangsoukkhoun, a curator based in Laos, was held at NIFA. In this lecture, participants discussed, while sharing their ideas as curators in Japan and Laos, respectively, what kind of theory or method should be used to practice curation in today’s society.

After the lecture, the members of both universities carried out field work for interviews, in which various people cooperated and participated. Among the participants were an artist who makes video works while running a popular cafe in Laos, a dancer /actor who has a studio in an alternative space of the local community, and film teachers at NIFA. During the interviews, they tried to communicate using different languages, ranging from Lao to English and Japanese, with the help of Lao students who acted as interpreters.

In addition to the interview program, the members from both universities visited various local sites such as temples, museums and waterfalls in the National Reserve to understand more deeply about the history and culture of Laos. In October of this year, Tokyo Geidai will invite some members from Laos to Tokyo in order to advance this collaboration project.

*This project is part of Tokyo Geidai’s initiative “Multi-faceted promotion by art-cultural exchange between Japan and ASEAN”, which was adopted under the Inter-University Exchange Project, Promotion of Inter-University Exchange in the ASEAN Region (Type B) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT).
