Landscape: Field recording workshops
Environmental sound excursions throughout Asia

 

Dutch electronic music imprint Field Records introduces music producers Robin Koek and Nick Lapien (better known as Artefakt) to collaborate on a series of field recording workshops, titled ‘Landscape’ – to be held in Vietnam, Korea, and Japan in May and June 2023. The workshop in Tokyo will take place at Tokyo University of the Arts (Ueno, Tokyo), co-hosted by the Global Support Center of Tokyo University of the Arts, with the cooperation of PARADISE AIR. Students of TUA as well as the public are welcome to participate in the workshop.

 

About workshop

Following the rise of technological developments and the rapid speed of today’s urban life, taking an active approach to listening to the world around us has become increasingly difficult. The process of field recording allows the listener to take a more active stance in the process – capturing these natural sounds and incorporating the results into artistic productions. By presenting workshops around the concept of field recording, Landscape support participants to develop their creative practices, thereby enabling new modalities of experiencing and interacting with their lived environments.

Upcoming Notices

After the on-site workshops, participants are welcome to individually practice the methodologies and skills learned. Later on in June, an advanced online workshop will be hosted by the ‘Landscape’ team – which is directed to the incorporation of field recording in music production.

In addition, an Asia tour for the label’s 15th anniversary is currently underway. The following dates and times are scheduled in Tokyo. We hope you will join us for this event as well.

Field Records
Field Records has been publishing exquisite electronic music since 2008. Founded by Arjan Rietveld, the Dutch label initially published material exclusively from Dutch artists before expanding into international realms. Ever since, the imprint showcases a versatile sound palette in which the natural world plays an elemental role.

 

Robin Koek
Robin Koek (1987) is an enterprising sound artist who aspires to nurture a new cognitive understanding of the world surrounding us mediated through art and education. His work reflects on the environment integrating field recordings and site-specificity in composition and installation practice, researching the spatial nature of sound in both the physical and virtual realm. Koek constructs immersive experiences at the intersections of these worlds merging analog, digital and acoustic phenomena. These augmented realities are sculpted out of code, sensing devices and media projections developed in interdisciplinary teams. His eight years of experience in music education will be instrumental in delivering the workshops.

 

Nick Lapien
Nick Lapien (1987) is a composer and sound artist whose work is best defined by its versatility. Operating under monikers such as Lapien, Nepal, Metropolis and Biophony, Lapien has presented over 20 vinyl releases in the past decade. Also, he played in clubs and museums across the globe. In recent years he has shifted his focus to acoustic music, always looking for unconventional ways of using acoustic sources in his music.

 

Arjan Rietveld
Arjan Rietveld (1987) is a music curator, label owner and writer. Following a deep dive into trance around the turn of the millennium, Rietveld initiated Field Records in 2008 – resulting in a string of left-of-centre records and events since its inception. In more recent times, Rietveld published a trance music encyclopaedia titled ‘’Hypnotised: A Journey Through Trance Music (1990-2005)’’. He also wrote on the subject for various international media.
