When You Leave Japan

When you leave Japan after completion of your studies at Geidai, you need to take the necessary procedures as follows.

At Local Municipal Office

You need to take the necessary procedures at your local municipal office. Bring your passport, residence card, individual number card (My Number), national health insurance card, and pension handbook (if applicable).

Submission of a “Move-out Notification”
You need to submit a “Move-out Notification” at your local municipal office. If you forget this step, you will be billed for the National Health Insurance premiums even after your return to your home country. The notification can be accepted up to two weeks prior to your return date.

Cancellation of National Health Insurance and a Refund Claim
You need to complete cancellation procedures and return your health insurance card at your local municipal office. If you have overpaid your insurance premiums, you can claim a refund.

Withdrawal from National Pension System (if applicable)
You can apply for withdrawal from the National Pension system at your local municipal office or at one of the Japan Pension Service branch offices*. If you have been enrolled in the system for six months or longer, you may be entitled to claim the lump-sum withdrawal payment. For more detail, please ask your local municipal office or Japan Pension Service.

*If Japan has an International Social Security Agreement with your home country, the period for which you paid contributions in Japan may count towards the pension system of your home country. For details, check with the appropriate office in your country.

At the Immigration Services Bureau

You must submit a Notification of leaving the affiliated organization at the Immigration Services Bureau. You can also submit it through the Immigration Services Agency’s e-Notification System. For more details, please refer to the Immigration Services Bureau’s Website.

Note: If you are planning to stay in Japan after leaving Tokyo Geidai for continuing your studies at another institution, employment, or seeking employment or stay in Japan for a short period of time for preparation to return to your home country, please be sure to take necessary procedures at the Immigration Services Bureau to maintain an appropriate status of residence. Others

Moving out of an Apartment or House
You need to inform your landlord or real estate agent of your intended moving date in advance. It is written in your lease contract how much notice you should provide before moving out. If you fail to inform within the designated notification period, you might be charged extra rent. Therefore, it is recommended to inform your landlord or real estate agent well in advance. When you move out, your landlord or real estate agent will inspect the room. In some cases, the costs of cleaning and repair will be deducted from the security deposit.
When you dispose of waste or used items, please follow the rules of your municipality. Bulky waste such as furniture and large appliances cannot be collected through the ordinary collection service. Be sure to check the rules of your local municipality on its website.
In addition, if you have a contract with a rent guarantor service company, or with utility providers for electricity, water, gas, etc., please notify them of your moving date in advance and settle the fees.

Close Your Bank/Postal Savings Account
Close your savings account with a bank or post office if you no longer need it. Please bring your passbook, cash card, and Hanko/Inkan (Seal) to the bank or post office with which you have an account. If you pay the bills for your utility fees or credit card expenses through your bank account, please make sure that all the transactions are completed before closing the account.

Cancellation of your mobile phone or other contracts
If you have a contract for a mobile phone, internet, or other services, check with the company providing the services on how to cancel and complete the cancellation procedures.
