When You Move in Japan

When you move your residence in Japan, there are some steps you need to take. .

Vacating an Apartment or House

You need to inform your landlord or real estate agent of your intended moving date in advance. It is written in your lease contract how much notice you should give before terminating tenancy. If you fail to inform within the designated notification period, you might be charged extra rent. Therefore, it is recommended to inform your landlord or real estate agent well in advance. When you move out, your landlord or real estate agent will inspect the room. In some cases, the costs of cleaning and repair will be deducted from the security deposit.
When you dispose of waste or used items, please follow the rules of your municipality. Bulky waste such as furniture and large appliances cannot be collected through the ordinary collection service. Be sure to check the rules of your local municipality on its website.
In addition, if you have a contract with a rent guarantor service company, or with utility providers for electricity, water, gas, etc., please notify them of your moving date in advance and take the necessary procedures.

At Local Municipal Office

Visit your local municipal office with your residence card, individual number card (My Number), and national health insurance card.
Even if you are moving within the same municipality, you must notify your municipality of the change of address. Please ask your local municipality office for details.

Move-out/in Notification
You need to report your move-out to the municipality where your previous residence is located within 14 days prior or after your move out date. If you move to a different municipality, submit the “Move-out Certificate” issued by your old municipality to the new one, along with a Move-in notification, within 14 days of your move-in date. After completion of this procedure, your new address will be printed on the back side of your residence card.
Even if you change addresses within the same municipality, you must notify your municipality of the change of address. Please ask your local municipality for more details.

National Health Insurance
You need to return your old National Health Insurance card to the municipality where you were previously registered and re-enroll in the insurance program in the municipality to which your new address belongs. When you notify the local municipal office of your move-out/in, please complete the necessary procedures for re-enrollment.

At the Post Office

If you submit a relocation form to a post office, they will forward your mail to your new address for one year. You can also register for this service online on Japan Post’s website. For more information, please check the website of Japan Post.

Report to the University
