Permission to Engage in Part-time Work

Work or want to work part-time or engage in other income-generating activities. You must apply for “Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted Under the Status of Residence Previously Granted” in advance at the Immigration Services Agency of Japan having jurisdiction over his/her domicile. Part-time work or other income-generating activities by international students are permitted in case of meeting the conditions listed below.

However, note that international students will only be permitted if it is considered that the part-time work in which they plan to engage will not obstruct their original objective as international students.

After you receive the permit to engage in part-time work, make sure that you submit a copy of your new Residence Card (both sides) to the Student Affairs Division International Exchange Section through the Google Classroom (Geidai account required. Class Code is “s5slrnu”) as soon as you have received it. *Please submit in the same procedure as <When you have received a new Residence Card>.

  • Working hours: 28 hours or less per week (during long-term holidays, 8 hours or less per day).
  • Part-time work or other income-generating activities in the adult entertainment industry (*1) is not permitted.
    (*1) Business types in the adult entertainment or adult entertainment-related category include the following types of businesses;
    – Businesses such as food and beverage with entertainment (eg. Restaurants that serve food and beverages while entertaining customers, such as lounges, or restaurants that serve food and beverages in darkly lit or narrowly partitioned spaces),
    – Amusement center operations include mahjong parlors, pachinko parlors, game centers, etc.
    – Specified amusement restaurant businesses such as nightclubs, etc.
    – Late-night alcohol-serving restaurant business, such as bars, taverns, and other establishments serving alcoholic beverages from midnight to 6 a.m.

<Examples of part-time jobs that are considered adult entertainment businesses or adult entertainment-related businesses>

Example 1: Working as a janitor in a store operating an adult entertainment business.
Example 2: Being hired by a store operating an adult entertainment business to perform.
Example 3: Working as a cook or hall staff in a restaurant that involves adult entertaining.
