Scholarships for self-funded students are categorized into two types according to the application method: The first type of scholarship requires application through the university, while the second type allows individual students to apply directly to the scholarship foundations.

Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship for Overseas Candidate 8/29 (Application Closed)

※This program is for overseas students scheduled to enroll in a Japanese university or graduate school under Japan’s pre-arrival university admission system.

Eligibility:
・Have either obtained or be in the process of applying for pre-arrival admission approval from the university or graduate school (under MEXT jurisdiction) to which you wish to enter as a degree student, and be scheduled for April 2024 or October (September) 2024 enrollment.
・Students participating in inter-university exchange programs are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.”MEXT”:Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
・Applicant must be born after April 2, 1979. (Under 45 years of age as of April 1 of the year the scholarship is awarded)

Scholarship:
For April enrollment: Scholarship payment begins in April 2024
(1) Undergraduates 100,000 yen per month
(2) Master’s students 140,000 yen per month
(3) Doctoral students 140,000 yen per month
*Research students are not eligible.

Supplemental for Airfare:Actual expenses to arrive in Japan up to 250,000 yen are reimbursed, after arrival in Japan. Successful applicants must submit all relevant receipts. Only the economy class fee is covered.

CWAJ Graduate Scholarship for Non-Japanese Women to Study in Japan (NJG)

  • Eligibility: Non-Japanese, non-permanent resident women, including LGBTQ+, who are enrolled in a PhD degree program, but not in the final year, in the graduate school of a Japanese university from April 2024 to March 2025.
  • Stipend: 2,000,000 yen

Honjo International Scholarship Foundation 3/29 (Application Closed)
  • Eligibility:The student must be enrolled as of September or October 2023 or currently applying for the academic course starting from September or October 2023 at agraduate school in Japan. Those who are already enrolled and those who are not enrolled yet (including people who are currently employed with jobs at the time ofapplying for the program) are both eligible to apply for this scholarship if you are going to be enrolled in September or October 2023.
    The enrollment duration until graduation must be longer than 12 months.
    To be eligible, the student applying for the PhD program must start the PhD course by the age of 35. The student applying for the master’s program must start the master course by the age of 30.
  • Stipend: The period of the scholarship for the recipient is set in accordance with the shortest period of time required to complete the intended degree.
    ¥210,000 per month for 1 or 2 years/¥190,000 per month for 3 years/¥160,000 per month for 4 years or 5 years.

  • Eligibility: The student must be enrolled as of April 2023 or currently applying for the academic course starting from April 2023 at a graduate school in Japan. Kanbe Foundation Scholarship 11/8 (Application Closed)
  • Eligibility: In principle, the scholarship is for individuals having non-Japanese nationality. Individuals must demonstrate through a well-articulated proposal the ability to work and carry out research in the field of ceramics.
  • Stipend: Up to Half a million Japanese Yen per recipient. Funding amount of funding will be divided by each person.
  • Application Period: November 3rd 2021 – January 7th 2022

Some private foundations notify the university of scholarship opportunities, but not all do.  Those who wish to obtain information on scholarship programs for privately-financed international students are encouraged to utilize the websites below, including the ones by JASSO. Please note that if you have been selected as a recipient of a scholarship through an individual application, you are ineligible for scholarships awarded through recommendation from the university because you cannot simultaneously receive more than one scholarship.
